YTU was established in 1984 and is one of the key provincial comprehensive universities of Shandong Province. Two of the most renowned institutions of higher education in China, Peking University and Tsinghua University, were instrumental in the creation of YTU, and the fine traditions of these two universities have been carried forward over the past years.
With good climate and security, Yantai is one of the best leisure cities in China. Yantai University is located on the shore of the Yellow Sea, less than one hundred meters from the coastline.
We scrupulously abide by the school’s motto of “Be trustworthy, be down-to-earth, be fond of learning, and practice earnestly.” We put great emphasis on innovative teaching and learning. We have a well developed set of academic disciplines covering the breadth of higher education. Many of our departments have outstanding features that distinguish them from similar disciplines at other universities. Our undergraduate educational system is broad and well founded. Post-graduate education at YTU has developed very quickly in recent years. Significant achievements in research have been made by our faculty and alumni. Since its beginnings YTU has attached great importance to international exchange and cooperation, and was one of the first group of universities permitted by the central government to recruit foreign educational experts and receive international students. YTU has established partnerships with over one hundred universities and institutions around the world, including cooperative programs with Republic of Korea and Germany. Now we receive hundreds of international students every year.

The major of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages was established in 2003. Yantai University was one of the first schools in Shandong province to set up this major. In 2014, it was approved as a professional master's degree authorization center for Teaching Chinese to Speakers of other Languages. In 2018, it passed the special examination and evaluation of professional degree authorization centers organized by the Ministry of Education.

The major of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages is a distinctive compound major to adapt to the national strategy of Chinese international promotion and international exchange.This major cultivates professionals who can teach Chinese as a second language at home and abroad and exchange Chinese and foreign cultures.In the past five years, more than 60 graduates have been selected by Hanban to work as Chinese volunteers in South Korea, Thailand, Mongolia, the Philippines, Nepal and other countries.
Journalism, established in 2002, is the earliest journalism and communication major in Jiaodong. In 2021, it was selected as a first-class undergraduate professional construction site in Shandong Province. Now it has a master’s degree in "Journalism and Communication", and has teaching and research institutions such as the provincial experimental teaching demonstration center sub-center "All Media News Production Center" and "Media Development and Strategic Communication Center". The comprehensive educational strength of the specialty ranks the top among the journalism and communication majors in Shandong Province. Journalism majors adhere to the open and compatible concept of "big communication" and "big news", and are committed to cultivating high-level and integrated media talents with both moral integrity and ability, modern communication concepts and international vision, understanding the laws of news communication, mastering the skills and methods of news communication, and breaking through professional restrictions. After graduation, students of this major can engage in news reporting, publicity, creation, planning, management and other related work in various news organizations and other media units, enterprises and public institutions.

The school has 20 professors, 49 associate professors, and 79% of faculty members with doctorates. The school has first-level discipline master programs in physics, and electronic science and technology, and professional degree master programs in electronic and communication engineering. Physics mainly trains graduate students in theoretical physics, particle physics and nuclear physics, condensed matter physics and optics.
