Founded in 1902, Nanjing University (NJU) enjoys a high reputation both at home and abroad, whose history has been closely connected with the nation’s mission and society’s needs. The university is listed in the first group of high-level universities in the national “Project 211”, “Project 985” and “Double First-Class” project, and is a member of the China 9 League (C9). The vision of NJU is to develop a world-class comprehensive, research-intensive and internationalized higher learning institution with top faculty, students and research.
Presently, NJU consists of 4 campuses and has 43,643 full-time students studying at 40 schools and departments, including 14,714 undergraduate students, 27,533 graduate students, and 1,396 international students. Among more than 2,000 faculty members, there are 30 Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 4 Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and 11 National Distinguished Teachers.
NJU has acquired more than 800 national, provincial and ministerial awards for research. In recent years, NJU has undertaken dozens of state key projects. In addition, it ranks top among Chinese universities in terms of quality and quantity of research papers listed in the Science Citation Index (SCI). The number of SCI publications of NJU was ranked 1st among Chinese universities for 7 years since 1992, and had the highest number of citations of SCI papers for 8 years since 1992.
According to the Essential Science Indicators, 20 academic disciplines at NJU are ranked in the top 1% worldwide, making her one of the leading comprehensive universities in China. NJU is ranked 73rd in the THE World University Rankings 2024. In 2024, NJU is ranked 4th in the Global Nature Index among global universities and 3rd among Chinese universities.
Nanjing University has always been actively engaged in international cooperation and exchanges. As one of China’s leading universities in global engagement, Nanjing University has established close partnerships with numerous renowned universities and high-level research institutions worldwide. It is among the first Chinese universities to attract international faculty and enroll international students. In the 1980s, Nanjing University collaborated with Johns Hopkins University to establish the Johns Hopkins University–Nanjing University Center for Chinese and American Studies, the first joint international higher education institution in China following the country’s Reform and Opening up. Today, Nanjing University is steadily expanding its global partnerships and aims to develop its campuses into attractive, inclusive, and dynamic spaces that foster international exchanges and collaborations among individuals from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
